Indian Sandalwood
Santalum album
Plantation grown. Australia. Zero wild harvest.
The species that built sandalwood's reputation, and nearly lost it. Wild S. album is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. That is exactly why we don't touch it. Our S. album comes from managed plantations in the Northern Territory and Western Australia, established specifically to take pressure off wild populations.
- ~95% sourced through Quintis Sandalwood Pty Ltd, the world's largest Indian sandalwood plantation operator, via our commercial partner Smith Agri International Pty Ltd
- ~5% from licensed independent cutters working with private landowners, each managing their own regulatory licensing
How trees are selected
Plantation trees are harvested on maturity, when heartwood development and oil profile reach specification. Selection is made by the plantation operator on a managed rotation, not on demand pressure.
What happens to the land
Harvested plantation blocks are rotated into other agricultural production (wheat, cotton, vegetables) as part of the landholder's crop cycle. It is working farmland, managed as such.
